House adopts resolution congratulating new head of Vatican Pope Leo XIV

MANILA, Philippines — The House of Representatives has adopted a resolution formally congratulating Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, for his election as the 267th Supreme Pontiff of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.
The resolution described Pope Leo XIV’s election as a “pivotal moment in the continued strengthening of the Catholic faith and a source of inspiration for the global Catholic community.”
It was authored by House Speaker Martin Romualdez and the following House leaders:
- Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio Gonzales Jr. of Pampanga
- Deputy Speaker David Suarez
- Majority Leader Manuel Jose Dalipe
- Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan
- Senior Deputy Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander Marcos
- Tingog Party-list Reps. Yedda Romualdez and Jude A. Acidre
“The election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, as the Vicar of Jesus Christ, marks a pivotal moment in the continued strengthening of the Catholic faith, and as the Supreme Pastor, Prime Witness to Faith and Unifier of the people of God, His Holiness stands as a beacon of harmony and peace, fostering unity among all believers,” the resolution reads as quoted in a statement released by Romualdez’s office on Sunday.
Pope Leo XIV succeeded Pope Francis, who died on April 21 due to complications of a stroke, according to the Vatican. He was 88 years old.
A copy of the resolution will be transmitted to the Apostolic Nunciature in Manila for forwarding to the Holy See, the statement said.
