OFW sentenced to death in Saudi has been released, repatriated to PH

MANILA, Philippines — An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia has been released and repatriated to the Philippines, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

DMW said that the OFW was convicted on September 24 last year for possession of illegal drugs and was granted freedom after its sustained diplomatic and legal efforts in coordination with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

Before his conviction, the OFW was arrested on April 2, 2023, and detained at Riyadh General Jail, located in Al Kharj, until he was sentenced on September 10, 2023.

The agency said that the OFW was repatriated last June 10 and was assured of “all necessary support during his visit to the DMW Central Office on Wednesday.

“Currently, the OFW is temporarily housed at a hotel in Pasay City under OWWA’s care while awaiting his flight to Butuan City,” the DMW said.

Through the agency’s partnership with DFA and OWWA, the OFW was granted legal representation and financial assistance, which ensured his access to due process and a safe return home. /cb
